The recent developments with melt spun rare-earth iron boride powder and its permanent magnets -
Dr David Brown, Magneqench Technology Centre, Singapore
This presentation reviews some recent developments with melt-spun RE-Fe-B powder that are enabling its magnets to have higher performance and greater environmental stability. Careful control of alloy composition, microstructure, powder morphology and surface treatment is necessary to yield the best performance possible from bonded and hot pressed nanocrystalline magnets. For bonded RE-Fe-B magnets applying a stable nano-scale protective coating on the powder surface prior to magnet fabrication has allowed them to operate in more extreme environments with minimal structural losses. Hot pressed melt-spun magnets have the advantages of full density and higher performance, and recent developments with these types of magnet will also be discussed.
