The continuous demand to improve machining productivity of standard and difficult-to-machine materials like high alloy cast iron, high strength steels, composite aerospace materials etc. has led to the development of high performance cutting tool materials like submicron cemented carbides, cermets, ceramics and superhard materials such as PCD and PCBN as well as wear resistant coatings.

This paper focuses on customized machining solutions relevant to the automotive, aerospace and power generation industries using modern cutting tool materials. Typical productivity gains will be presented and discussed.
