Characterisation of injection mouldability of HDH titanium powder
Professor Yunxin Wu, Tsinghua University, China
In order to expand the application of hydride-dehydride (HDH) titanium powder in metal injection molding, a mechanical spheroidization treatment was performed to modify the powder particle shapes as well as its flowability. Feedstocks were then made from the three powders: HDH titanium powder, spheroidized HDH titanium powder, and gas-atomized titanium powder. Rheological behaviors of the feedstocks were characterized by torque and capillary rheometers, and the power law model of viscosity and moldability index were derived and compared. It is concluded that the spheroided HDH titanium powder behaves similarly to gas-atomized titanium powder and that a combination of the three powders is expected to provide a good solution for MIM applications.
