Professor Randall German
San Diego State University, USA

Speaker biography:
Dr. German received his Ph.D. from UC Davis in 1975. His teaching and research interests are in the area of Powder Metallurgy, Sintering, Materials Processing, Ceramics, in particular, engineering materials and their net-shape fabrication based on techniques such as powder metallurgy, injection moulding, and advanced ceramic forming technologies. 

Prior to joining SDSU as the Associate Dean of Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. German was the CAVS Chair Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Director of Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems at the Mississippi State University. Dr. German holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University Carlos III de Madrid, is a Fellow of APMI and ASM, holds the Tesla Medal, and is listed in various issues of Who's Who, and has received numerous awards. He chairs the annual Powder Injection Moulding Conference in the US.

Ingo Cremer

Speaker biography:
Ingo Cremer, CEO of CREMER GmbH & POLYFOUR GmbH, has worked for more than 20 years in the field of industrial furnaces for PM and MIM. Following his master degree in Material Science and Furnace Construction in 1996, he has managed the family company together with his brother, Harald Cremer. Because of his in-depth understanding of customers’ need and market development, he plays a vital role in supporting the successful growth of the company. In 2007, he had the honour to be appointed as President of the EPMA.

Dr Olle Grinder
PM Technology AB, Sweden


Speaker biography:
Dr. Grinder received his M. Sc. degree in 1968 and the Tech, Dr. degree in 1977 at the Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Stockholm, Sweden. He is now working as Associate Professor at the same institute.

Dr. Grinder started his consulting company PM Technology AB in 1986. The consultation work is primarily focused on different aspects of powder metallurgy including industrial production, properties and applications of PM material.


Philipp Kauffmann
WZL-RWTH Aachen, Germany

Speaker biography:
Philipp Kauffmann has a degree in mechanical engineering. Since 2005 he has worked for the Gear Research Centre at the Laboratory of Machine Tools at RWTH Aachen University. He works in the area of PM-gear manufacturing and testing with a focus on surface densification by rolling. Since 2007 he has led the team of gear manufacturing technologies.

Dr Brian James

Speaker biography:
Dr. W. Brian James is Manager of International Technical Service for Sales and Marketing for US based Hoeganaes Corporation. A PhD and chartered engineer, he is a fellow of AMPI International, fellow of the institute of materials, minerals and mining, and a fellow of ASTM international. He is also very active in the field of standardisation in connection with ASTM International, MPIF, and ISO standards related to powder metallurgy. He is the recipient of numerous other honours from, among others, the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF).

 

Dr Leo Prakash

Speaker biography:
Dr. Leo J Prakash holds a Ph.D. in Cemented Carbides and has over three decades of experience in the field of cutting tools for wood and metals as well as wear parts. His key areas of interest are in development and application of new tool materials and their manufacturing processes and their implementation in an industrial atmosphere.


Dr K S (Sim) Narasimhan

Speaker biography:
Sim Narasimhan is Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Hoeganaes Corporation, New Jersey.  He is recognized for his contributions to Powder Metal Industry for over 30 years.  He is a Fellow of American Society of Metals, Fellow of American Powder Metallurgy Institute, also a Senior Member of IEEE.

He is active in various boards of Metal Powder Industry Federation, Technical Board, Board of Trustee of Center for Powder Metal Technology, and Road Map Committee Chairperson.  He chaired in various conferences of American Institute of Physics, I.E.E.E. and MPIF.



Professor Hywel Davies
University of Sheffield, UK

Speaker biography:
Hywel Davies is Emeritus Professor of Physical Metallurgy and Magnetic Materials in the Department of Engineering Materials at the University of Sheffield. His research over the past 40 years has concentrated largely on the processing, structures and properties of rapidly solidified alloys in ribbon, wire and powder forms. Types of materials investigated and developed include metallic glasses, nanocrystalline alloys and microcrystalline materials. Recently, a new type of nanocomposite hard magnetic alloys with enhanced magnetic properties, resulting from inter-grain exchange coupling, has been demonstrated and developed by Prof Davies and his research team. His research on powder metallurgy has spanned a wide range of alloys, mainly involving rapid solidification as an initial process step, and include high conductivity copper alloys, several types of ferrous alloys and rare earth alloys. Research on metal injection moulding, notably on the behaviour of composite binder systems has also been undertaken. Some 430 publications have derived from this research. Prof Davies was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2003

 

Mark C. Thomason

Speaker biography:

Mark has worked in the particulate materials industries for nearly thirty years.  His efforts has been in the design, manufacturing, and support of manufacturing equipment.  Specifically, powder compaction and sizing presses and heat treatment and sintering furnaces.  Mark’s current responsibilities is the management of the export market segment for the Gasbarre Products, Inc. companies.  Some of Mark’s accomplishments  include: a degree in applied physics, electromechanical engineering minor degree, Powder Metal Technologist Certification, Engineering of over seventy different machine types, and authoring six technical articles for the PM industry.


Dr. Wolfram Heinke
BASF Ltd, Hong Kong

Speaker biography:
Wolfram Heinke holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Darmstadt, Germany. He worked several years in the R&D of turbo machinery and received his PhD in 2002. The same year he joined the engineering department of BASF. In 2008 he took over the regional responsibility for the PIM Catamold business in Asia-Pacific, located in Hong Kong.

 

Professor Yang Luo

Speaker biography:
Professor Luo graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in Kharkov, USSR in 1961 and gained master degree. At the same year he joined with Beijing Central Iron & Steel Research Institute (CISRI). As Senior Engineer and professor he worked on magnetic materials until 1988. Then he joined with San Huan Inc.(Academy Sinica). As Vice President he was in charge for license negotiations with both SSMC and GM. From 1993 to 1995 he was in charge of acquisition negotiation with GM for Magnequench. After retiring he becomes an independent consultant.  Prof. Luo is author of numerous articles in professional journals, and is author and editor of a monograph series on NdFeB magnets. Being chairman and organizer of several international conferences Professor Luo’s activities have promoted technical and information exchange between China and foreign countries.


Gerold Stetina

Speaker biography:
Gerold Stetina was born in the year 1971 in Austria. He got his master degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Material Science at the University of Leoben, Austria in the year 1999 specializing on fatigue properties of light metals. Parallel to practical experiences in the field of aluminum impact extrusion as project engineer at company Neumann Aluminium he graduated as MSc at Danube University of Krems, Austria, in Quality Management. Since 2003 Gerold Stetina is working at Miba Sinter Austria in R&D, where he is currently in charge of the R&D team for Materials and Processing Technology.


David Brown
Magnequench Technology Centre, Singapore

Speaker biography:
David Brown is a senior research scientist at Magnequench, the leading global producer of Neodymium Iron Boride powder used for high performance bonded permanent magnets.
David Brown carried out his Ph.D. on melting technology at Birmingham University in the mid 1990s, and later joined Professor Harris’s magnetics group to carry out post-doctoral research on permanent magnet materials and their production processes. David Brown joined Magnequench in North America during 2000. Since then he has relocated to Singapore with the Company, to be closer to the production facilities. His role at Magnequench includes developing alloy compositions, melting/quenching processes, powder metallurgy and net-shape forming techniques for specific permanent magnet applications.

 

Dr. Yunxin Wu

Speaker biography:
Dr. Yunxin Wu is a professor of materials in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. His current research interests include powder materials, metal injection molding, sintering, and mechanical alloying.

 

Professor Kuen-Shyang Hwang
National University, Taiwan

Speaker biography:
Kuen-Shyang (K. S.) Hwang got his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1984. His work experience includes Materials/Packaging Engineering Manager at General Instrument Corp. (Vishay) in New York and Metallurgist at Emporium Specialties in Pennsylvania. Presently, he is teaching at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National Taiwan University. He has published 70 journal papers, 70 conference papers, and 6 patents, which are in production. His honours include Outstanding Teacher from National Taiwan University and Metallurgy Award from C.D. Ho foundation.

He was studying 2000-2004 “Material Science & Engineering” at Hefei University of Technology and got the Bachelor degree in 2004. Ray Guo, Customer Technical Service Manager- Asia, is presently working at Quebec Metal Powders (Suzhou) Company Ltd., China. He has been with QMP since 1997, stationed in QMP Asia Pacific regional office, Hong Kong, from 1997 to 2006 and moved to QMP Suzhou in 1997. Ray Guo held a PhD in Metals and Materials Engineering from University of British Columbia, Canada, and also M. Sc. & B. Sc. in Engineering from Dalian University of Technology, China.

Jessu Joys

Speaker biography:
Mr.  Jessu Joys is Technical Manager – Powders, for the US-based company United States Metal Powder Corporation that produces atomized aluminium powders and copper based powders. He is a chemical engineer, APMI member and member of MPIF standard committees.  His published papers and patents will include copper infiltration of ferrous PM parts and been working closely to promote Aluminium Powder Metallurgy process and applications for the last eight years.

 

Louise Chen

Speaker biogrpahy:
Louise Chen is metallography supervisor of Höganäs Asia Technical Centre.  In 2005 she obtained her Masters degree in Material Science from Central South University.  From here she began her career at Höganäs as an engineer. She is responsible for customer technical support, new powder and PM technology application and education for customers.

Thomas Knutsson

Speaker biography:
Thomas Knutsson qualified as a Mechanical Engineer and joined ASEA, as the company was then known, in 1974, working on their Quintus presses. The company subsequently became part of the ABB group and then part of Flow International, USA, at which point the company name changed to Avure Technologies in 1999. In 2005, Avure became a privately owned company.
Thomas has worked in production, purchasing and sales functions in his career with the company. Since 2004, he has been Director of Sales in Asia for all of the company’s products.

 

Keith Murray

Speaker biography:
Keith joined Sandvik Osprey in July 2007 as Business Development Manager in the Powders Group, before moving to his current position of European Sales & Marketing Manager in June 2008.

Prior to joining Osprey Keith worked for 12 years in the Steel Industry, initially in a range of technical and manufacturing roles whilst more recently taking on a number of commercial positions  

Keith has a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge as well as an MBA from Warwick Business School in the UK.

 

Uwe Haupt

Speaker biography:
My professional career started after graduation at the University of Karlsruhe as a Chemical Engineer in 1989. I worked for Arburg in the Engineering department and as the Powder injection Molding (PIM) group started in 1990 it was my task to specify and buy the equipment, which is still in use. From then until 1999 I worked in the PIM field and one of my major tasks was to support customers in all belongings regarding PIM (mixing, molding, mold design, debinding, sintering, suppliers). In 2001 I started to work in the parent company in the technology transfer and support group. My focus was on special processes like Gas Assisted Molding, Two Component Molding and of course LSR.
From January 2003 to August 2007 I was working at ARBURG Inc. in Newington, CT as Engineering Manager.
Since September 2007 I am responsible for the internal sales North America and for PIM Accounts world wide. I have presented more than 20 Papers on PIM and other Special Molding Processes.

 

Dr YiMin Li
Central South University, China 


Speaker biography:
YiMin Li was born in 1971 and graduated from Central South University with a major in powder injection molding.  He is director of the institute of structural material and manufacturing technology in Powder Metallurgy Academy of Central South University.
In 2000, he founded HuNan Injection High Technology Co, Ltd and holds the post of general manager. The major products of the company include medical instruments, consumer electronics, firearms and hardware, and it is the largest supplier of injection molded biopsy forceps in China now.

 

Dr Ken Mingard
National Physical Laboratory, UK


Speaker biography:
Ken Mingard joined the National Physical Laboratory in 2005 after 15 years in industry working in research and development, mostly in the production and use of metal powders.  Starting with sprayforming of aluminium he has worked his way up in density through steels, cobalt and now at NPL works on tungsten carbide hardmetals amongst other materials.  On joining NPL he returned to electron microscopy as a characterisation technique, having last used this extensively while studying high temperature superconductors for his D.Phil. at the University of Oxford.

 

Steven Levesque
Advanced Vacuum Systems Inc., USA


Speaker biography:
Steven Levesque is President and CEO of AVS, Incorporated, located in Massachusetts.  Steven started his career at the Rhode Island School of Engineering and proceeded to work on a computer science degree while working nights as a Machinist.  In his spare time he built and raced performance automobiles, which provided him with a technical advantage working all aspects of Vacuum Furnaces.  During 20 years of Engineering and Management in almost every aspect of AVS, Inc. he was promoted to President in 1990.

Steven continues to meet customers' process objectives by designing state of the art vacuum and pressure furnaces which meet demanding process requirements for less.

 

Claus J. Joens

Speaker biography:
Educated in Germany and in the USA, graduated with a BSBA degree in 1966 from the University of Minnesota.
Started Elnik Systems in 1969, a manufacturer of temperature controls, programmers and recorders for plastic injection moulding machines, extruders and furnaces.
President of Elnik Systems, manufacturer of vacuum heat treating furnaces and the one step debind and sinter furnance MIM 3000. President of DSH Technologies LLC, a company equipped to provide MIM product development work as well as process time improvements and provides toll debinding and sintering.

Speaker biography:
Mike Wu graduated from Central South University of China, and got his masters degree in material science in 2005.  He then joined Höganäs Technical Center immediately after his graduation. In the Technical Center he was mainly focused in customer technical support, the three years later, he moved to sales department in technical sales.

With 16 years working experience in the steel industry respectively at Baosteel, Sandvik and Erasteel, he is currently responsible for sales of PM products in the Chinese market as Erasteel Sales Manager, China.

Eric Bouchard, Business Development Director, Tekna Plasma Systems completed his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Waterloo in 1994 and his Master in Business Administration from the University of Sherbrooke. Eric joined Tekna Plasma Systems in 1996 and actively participated in the growth of the company either on a business or technical aspect of plasma equipment design.
